Ok, let's get straight into the world's greatest headspin battle so we can continue without interruption. Best not to watch it at work because you WILL cry out some serious words if you've not seen it before!
Currently nursing TWO injuries in the same part of my body, it's been a pretty sad time here at the lab. However, Monkey and I have (loosely) compiled a list of 5 ways to prevent injury. Please enjoy!
1. The Warm-up (feat. The Stretch)
May seem obvious, but sometimes you may be so keen to 'get going' that you risk injury in the first 5 minutes of the session. By not warming up, I managed to inherit a groin strain within ten minutes because I 'warmed up' with swipes. (More on that in section 4: 'Calm down!').
Stretching cold is also not a great idea, for the same reason that Formula 1 drivers have to have the tyres hot before the race starts - EFFICIENCY!
Get that heart-rate up, Folks.
2. Conditioning
We all have natural gifts, but we must support our attributes by conditioning our bodies. A couple push-ups here and there wont hurt, and your body will be more responsive if you engage more muscles than JUST the ones you think you need for a technique. Footballers, sailors, rockclimbers, midwives - this applies to you too!
3. Sleep / Rest
My personal favourite since I don't get enough of it. Muscles need serious recovery time relative to how hard you push them so having rest days in your training regime may ultimately improve your productivity.
4. Calm down!
We all know that hesitation causes accidents / injuries, but over-zealous attack can be just as hazardous. Know your limits and constantly push against them, but remember there may be a number of steps to go through on your way to an achievement. Ask someone with more knowledge than you (yes they DO exist) for advice. They will usually steer you right. Each one teach one.
5. Effective warm-down
I was out for 9 months with a wrist injury I IGNORED after doing some stupid dance competition in a club and rolling straight out into the November air. Have 3 different warm down regimes of different lengths so you know that if you are short of time you can at least squeeze in a couple stretches.
We could go on about massage and physio, but frankly, I have the urge to train now so need to get moving!
With the injury-prone Monkey & TinMan on the road to recovery, we tastefully managed to catch colds too! That didn't stop us from doing the podcast this week, so please enjoy! I poledance in this episode. It's not pretty, ha.
Our podcasts are now hosted at http://bbetter.podbean.com/ but will always be available here, on the website & Facebook pages.
